As per the report Facebook.com grabbed the number one ranking in the category for the first time in July with 20.9 million visitors, up 179 percent versus year ago. Orkut ranked second with 19.9 million visitors (up 16 percent vs. year ago), followed by BharatStudent.coma and twitter.com. Below are some stats from comScore.
Although it was orkut which was the first real product that brought social networking to India, but then there was lot of developments with facebook, which took it to the top spot. In my view the following development were a key for facebook's current success.
Facebook was the first to bring 'Privacy' aspect in to the social networking market. Also
Social Gaming & Social RSS proved to be beneficial to Facebook
