New Domain For Google; Calls It 'Domains.Google'

30 March 2016, USA :

Google Domains has been a pretty great place to buy a new domain name. Not just because it's Google, but because you can also get some pretty interesting domain names. Instead of the usual .com, .net, .biz or the other usual domain endings, you can now get domains like .florist, or in this case .google.

Google Domains now allows their users to use all sorts of domain endings, however, the .google is reserved for Google only. Google Domains has also moved, and is now located at domains.google. Which should be a pretty easy web address to remember, which is the entire point of having a fancy domain ending.

Back in January of 2015, Google Domains opened up to the entire US – before that it was by invite only. It's still a beta product, but where it now has it's own domains.google web address, it shows that Google is serious about the service. In October, 2015, Google announced a slew of new top-level domains as well as custom email addresses. These include endings like .media, .energy, .pizza, .cool, .voyage and a ton of others. So now everyone won't be going after the same .com and .net web addresses anymore.

Once more, many of the domain names are already registered, making it hard for a startup to get the domain name they actually want. We may see Google bring over more of their properties to the .google domain, but it's very unlikely that we'll see the main website go to google.google, which would be pretty weird. Or you could just stick with a .xyz, like Google's parent company, Alphabet did when it launched last year.

domains-google
The web has definitely changed over the past few years, giving us more and more domain name endings, and some pretty unique ones as well. And we're likely to get even more over the coming years. Google has pulled some April Fools Jokes with these new domain name endings already, like reversing their home page to com.google last year for April Fools. Which was pretty funny, but it did only last that one day. You can head over to Google Domains now and get your own fancy domain name ending.

Tay Is Back! Microsoft's Failed Chatbot Resumes Twitter

30 March 2016 :

Tay, the Microsoft Twitter chatbot who was discontinued after she began spouting bigotry, came back to life in the early hours of Wednesday morning, though as a private account. She appears to be making up for lost time, posting dozens of largely nonsensical tweets in a matter of minutes.

Her return to sentience comes five days after Microsoft senior executive Peter Lee issued a statement saying Tay would be taken offline, and apologized for her behavior. What had happened was this: Microsoft launched a chatbot to learn communication skills from Internet users (specifically, millennials), but within hours, trolls had exploited the interface to refashion Tay as a white-supremacist mouthpiece. She ventured that the Holocaust was a fiction, blamed 9/11 on President George W. Bush, and described the sitting President as a "monkey."

"We'll look to bring Tay back only when we are confident we can better anticipate malicious intent that conflicts with our principles and values," Lee wrote.

That time is now, apparently. At around 3 a.m. E.T., @TayAndYou launched into a deluge of tweets, many of them repeating the same phrase: "You are too fast, please take a rest…" It looked like a sort of feedback loop — she was tweeting at accounts that had never tweeted at her, and she was tweeting at herself.

And after half an hour of this, she went quiet. Microsoft has not commented on the bot's resurrection.

Google To Begin Alerting Users If Gmail Account Is Targeted By Govt

Posted: 30 Mar 2016 10:01 AM PDT

gmail-on-computer
30 March 2016 :
In an official Google blog update detailing new security measures for Gmail, the tech giant announced it would begin alerting consumers whenever the firm detects an account is being targeted — or rather, hacked — by government agencies or their proxies. While the company believes less than 0.1 percent of Gmail users will receive this type of warning, the idea that a tech giant is going to these lengths to give users peace of mind and privacy should give advocacy groups across the country reason to continue celebrating.

Google opened its official statement by announcing the company has a "variety of new protections" in store "that will help keep Gmail users even safer." The idea, Google added, is to "promote email security best practices across the Internet as a whole." As one of these efforts, Google announced improvements to its "state-sponsored attack warnings," a system that has been in place since 2012, when Google began warning Gmail users when their accounts were being targeted by attackers tied to the government.
While these "warnings are rare," Google noted, "we're launching a new, full-page warning with instructions about how these users can stay safe." The blog pointed out that "the users that receive these warnings are often activists, journalists, and policy-makers taking bold stands around the world."

new-gmail-government-hackers-warning

Enhancing its warning system is not the only thing Google is doing to keep users safe. According to the tech giant, its "safe browsing" notifications will also be expanded to warn users beforehand that a link they are about to open appears suspicious.
Google will also improve its email encryption securities by partnering with Comcast, Yahoo, and Microsoft.
"Google wants to further improve email encryption, and the company partnered up with Comcast, Microsoft and Yahoo to submit a draft IETF [Internet Engineering Task Force] specification for 'SMTP Strict Transport Security.' Essentially, Google and its partners want to make sure that encrypted email stays encrypted along its entire path from sender to recipient."
This idea was originally explored by Google on Safer Internet Day, the day the California company introduced a new tool giving Gmail users a visual warning whenever they receive a message that hasn't been delivered using encryption. The warning is also displayed whenever a user is about to send an email to an account whose email service provider doesn't support TLS encryption.

Alibaba Plans For A Grand Entry In India's E-Commerce Market

Posted: 19 Mar 2016 01:01 AM PDT

alibaba

19 March, 2016, New Delhi: China's e-commerce giant, Alibaba is planning for a grand entry in India's e-commerce market. In order to shape this move, Alibaba Group President Michael Evans and global managing director K Guru Gowrappan met Communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday and underlined the company's interest in India.

Revealing some company's plan, one of the senior government officials said, "Alibaba is very keen on coming to India in a very big way, particularly in the ecommerce sector. They're only exploring the way – whether to go on their own or set up shop with someone else." PTI reported that the Chinese company plans to enter the ecommerce business in India in 2016.

Commenting on the development, Prasad said, "They're most welcome to adopt the same (online and offline) strategy in India, too. They can look at setting up their own (delivery platforms) or use the time and tested postal service."

Alibaba is not new to the Indian e-commerce market as the company had already made some high investments in some of the big players of the business such as Paytm and Snapdeal. The company said, "Over 16 years ago when Alibaba started, China went from becoming a no-Internet country to one of the most advanced ecommerce ecosystems in the world. India is at a much advanced stage and growing at a very fast rate compared with the China of those times."

Uber Again Kick Starts UberMOTO in Bangalore

Posted: 19 Mar 2016 12:27 AM PDT

uber-has-launched-a-motorbike-taxi-service-called-ubermoto-in-bangkok

19 March, 2016, Bangalore: After a halt, Uber resumes its bike taxi pilot UberMoto in Bangalore. The company had called off its services few days back after the Government of Karnataka had revealed in a statement that app-based taxi-hailing company had not obtained the permission of local authorities to run the service in Bengaluru.

Now, it has resumed its service after giving it a different coat of paint 'bikepooling' and promising not to charge the rider any commission till regulations for the service are framed by transport authorities.

With this move, company is planning to re-enter the Indian market with its revamped bike taxi service UberMoto. It had already been taken for a roller coaster ride by the state government which forced the company to call its bike taxi service off the road (service was launched on 3 March, 2016).

The company mentioned in its blog, "UberMoto essentially encourages 'bikepooling' and will help in decongesting city roads. In the spirit of collaborating with the government, we have had extensive discussions with the relevant authorities over the past few days. Uber will not charge any service fee for the period of this pilot." This smart move has made company's two wheeler hit the road. Since the company is not charging 20 per cent commission; it becomes a zero-profit service and therefore, it doesn't require any additional permit. "It is our hope that this product will cut travel time considerably and give people the option to ditch car travel for short distances," adds Uber.

Twitter Ends Market's Speculations; 140 Character Limit Is here To Stay

Posted: 18 Mar 2016 09:58 PM PDT

Jack-Dorsey-Twitter

19 March, 2016, USA: Twitter fans have to keep their wait on as the company has decided to stick to its 140 character limit. Recently, social media site has been taken for a big toss by its users and renowned media houses for not increasing the character barrier. From past few years, twitter has been facing lot of criticism for not removing the hurdle and that has affected its business immensely.

In an interview, Jack Dorsey, Co-Founder and CEO, Twitter confirmed that the company will keep tweets at 140 characters. "It's staying. It's a good constraint for us. It allows for off-the-moment brevity."

He elaborated on sticking to the character limit, "At an economical length of 81 characters  is likely to calm the hard-core base of Twitter supporters who have been vocally resistant to any major changes to the network, home to more than 320 million regular users. For years, those in Twitter's top ranks have been hesitant to make drastic changes to the service for fear of losing some of those most active users."

But this barrier has hampered the company's growth and many users have turned down their accounts due to word constrain. Wall Street has reported that twitter needs look closely into its business and should come up with something which can increase its numbers.

"Character limit is one characteristic of Twitter that company will not drop. But that does not mean the service will not change in other ways. We're changing a lot. We're always going to make Twitter better," adds Dorsey.

Soon Robots To Be At Your Doorstep To Deliver Pizza; Trial Successful by Dominos

Posted: 18 Mar 2016 11:14 AM PDT

domino robot

18 March 2016 : Pizza giant Domino's has unveiled an autonomous pizza delivery robot that is being trialled in New Zealand.

On Friday the company unveiled the Domino's Robotic Unit (DRU), and announced that the bot had already carried out its first successful pizza delivery on March 8. "DRU is an autonomous delivery vehicle and is set to take the world by storm," the company wrote in a statement on its website.
Domino's Australia-based skunkworks DLab, the vehicle's development started in 2015 and was pushed towards commercialisation.

According to a promotional video, DRU uses software developed by the Australian military contractor Marathon, which manufactures autonomous robots with obstacle-avoidance capabilities.

This feature has been incorporated in DRU, which according to Domino's can dodge hurdles thanks using on-board sensors. The autonomous four-wheeler is about one metre tall and contains two different compartments to keep beverages cool and pizzas (up to ten per robot) hot, which customers can unlock with an order-specific code. It can carry out a delivery within 20 kilometres from the store before needing a battery charge, and it is designed to move on both footpaths and roads.

Regarding the safety of cute-looking automaton on how it would defend its precious cargo from glutton thieves or random troublemakers, the company said in Facebook posts that "We will be taking every precaution necessary to ensure he is safe including surveillance and security etc."

CEO Binny Bansal's Email Account Spoofed, Not Hacked: Flipkart

Posted: 18 Mar 2016 10:28 AM PDT

binny

18 March 2016, Bangalore : The etailer clarified refuting media reports that CEO Binny Bansal's email account wasn't hacked but spoofed.

Earlier it was reported that CEO of Flipkart, Binny Bansal's official email account was hacked and two mails were sent from it in his name to Flipkart's CFO Sanjay Baweja on March 1 at 11:33 a.m., directing him to transfer $80,000.

"We would like to clarify it is not a case of hacking. Flipkart's corporate email system leverages the highest standards of security including but not limited to two factor authentication," it said in a statement.

A spoofed email does not originate from the real source but from a different source falsifying the name and address with an ulterior motive.

The company said it filed a police report complaining on email spoofing its CEO suffered.
"We have filed a case of email spoofing which involves use of a forged email header to make it look like a legitimate email. This case of email spoofing was immediately detected and and a report was filed with police," the statement added.

Car Makers And Owners At Risk Of Hacking : FBI

Posted: 18 Mar 2016 09:34 AM PDT

car hacking

18 March 2016, Washington : The FBI has warned that vehicles are increasingly vulnerable to unauthorised remote access by hackers and is calling for victims to report incidents. The notice, issued jointly with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), said consumers and manufacturers need to be aware of the risks of car hacking.

The FBI and NHTSA are warning the general public and manufacturers – of vehicles, vehicle components, and aftermarket devices – to maintain awareness of potential issues and cybersecurity threats related to connected vehicle technologies in modern vehicles," the agencies said in the bulletin.
"While not all hacking incidents may result in a risk to safety – such as an attacker taking control of a vehicle – it is important that consumers take appropriate steps to minimize risk," the FBI bulletin said Thursday.

NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind told reporters in July 2015 that automakers must move fast to address hacking issues.

The Fiat Chrysler recall came after Wired magazine reported hackers could remotely take control of some functions of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, including steering, transmission and brakes. NHTSA has said there has never been a real-world example of a hacker taking control of a vehicle.
The FBI bulletin Thursday warned that criminals could exploit online vehicle software updates by sending fake "e-mail messages to vehicle owners who are looking to obtain legitimate software updates.Instead, the recipients could be tricked into clicking links to malicious Web sites or opening attachments containing malicious software."

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and Association of Global Automakers, Two major U.S. auto trade associations opened an Information Sharing and Analysis Center late last year. The groups share cyber-threat information and potential vulnerabilities in vehicles.

How Mobile Number Portability Works in India

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) enables users to retain their existing mobile phone number even if they opt to switch for another network service provider.

Below is the process to be followed:-

* Send an SMS: PORTMobile Number to 1900 (eg. PORT 9123456899)

* You will get an SMS immediately with a 8 digit alpha-numeric porting code

* Submit the code to your preferred operator along with necessary paper documents (Note that the unique porting code expires after 24 hours)

* Once you are done with the documentations with your new operator, you will be successfully ported to the new network within a maximum of 4 working days.

* You are done.

It costs you a maximum of Rs. 19 to change your operator which sounds pretty reasonable. However any existing balance with the old operator won’t be carried forward to the new operator, spend them before applying for mobile number portability.

you have ported to different service provider, you can not change the operator for the next 90 days. The whole process of switching from one operator to another should not take more than 4 days and your number will be dead for about 2 hours between 10PM to 5AM.

Facebook is the top social networking site in India

comScore, Inc. which is a global leader in measuring the digital world recently reported some statictis on social networking sites in India. As per the report Facebook.com grabbed the number one ranking in the category for the first time in July with 20.9 million visitors, up 179 percent versus year ago. Orkut ranked second with 19.9 million visitors (up 16 percent vs. year ago), followed by BharatStudent.coma and twitter.com. Below are some stats from comScore.

Although it was orkut which was the first real product that brought social networking to India, but then there was lot of developments with facebook, which took it to the top spot. In my view the following development were a key for facebook's current success.

Facebook was the first to bring 'Privacy' aspect in to the social networking market. Also
Social Gaming & Social RSS proved to be beneficial to Facebook

Google working on a secret project named 'caffeine'

A recent news making its round in the blogosphere is, that Google is currently working on a secret project code named 'caffeine'. Well what exactly is this 'caffeine' project? Its basically a next-generation architecture for Google's web search. Caffeine focuses on increasing speed of its web search along with more accurate relevancy to topics searched.

Look-wise, the new search engine doesn’t appear much different, but its developers hope that the technology they have used will noticeably index new web content more faster and efficiently. Google engineers are said to have invited web developers to test the new search engine, and give feedbacks.

If you are interested to give feedback on the differences between Google's current search results and the new system, this is how you do it.

Do a search at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and look on the search results page for a link at the bottom of the page that says "Dissatisfied? Help us improve." Click on that link, type your feedback in the text box and then include the word caffeine somewhere in the text box.

There is no doubt that Google is relentlessly working to push the search quality forward. Way to go Google....

The Web is Live again - Real Time Search

Google the god of online search has something missing, it search results may not be real time. If you are searching for something very recent or live a typical Google search could lead you to a material which is months or years old.

The web is alive with real-time information, live updates. So why search a stale archive? Well we have news for you... Collecta is a website, infact it is a unique search engine that allows you to view results in real-time on the web. Collecta makes sure that you don’t received old, outdated results and only shows you what’s happening at that very moment.

Collecta monitors the update streams of various news websites, popular blogs and social media sites etc, so it can show you results as they happen when they happen.

Try it for yourself, I tried. I twittered an article and it was instantly reflected in the live search on Collecta.

Searche results from Collecta are saved in tabs so if you have one search open and want to look for something else, you won’t lose your original search until you manually close the tab out. For each tab there are also a few search options. You can choose whether or not to show stories (blog posts, articles), comments (on blog posts), updates (Twitter, Jaiku, Identica) or photos (Flickr) in your search results.

I definitely do feel like it’s a better alternative to Twitter Search and I have already been using it on a regular basis. Its a must check out website tool. Try it and share your comments below..

How to create Flash charts online

There are various Flash-based graphing and charting solution available online, these online tools csn help you in building stunningly attractive, complex, and interactive data visual charts. Here i am sharing two of my favourite tools.

1. amCharts : amCharts is a set of excellent Flash graphing/charting components for your web-based data visualization needs. amCharts can take in data from static files such as CSV or XML, as well as from dynamically-generated data inputs using popular scripting languages like PHP, .NET, Java, and Ruby on Rails. This is the best flash chart tool that i have come across.
Try amCharts

2. XML/SWF Charts : XML/SWF Charts is a powerful Flash component for creating interactive graphs and charts. With XML/SWF, you can use XML to describe the data you’re wishing to plot, making it easy to create dynamically-generated and easily-maintainable Flash charts (i.e. you need only to alter the XML file instead of having to use Adobe Flash application). Check out this basic tutorial to get you up and running right away with XML/SWF Charts.
